There is a need to better understand exactly what UK climate observations are being used for, and to understand which of these observations meet international climate standards such as those set by the UK Global Climate Observing System (GCOS).
In response to this need, UK-EOF has set up and coordinates a small group of experts from CEH, DECC, DFID, Met Office, NERC and STFC, which aims to address national coordination of GCOS activities. One of the first activities of this group has been to commission work to identify what UK climate observations are being used for, and to promote knowledge of common standards. Information held within the UK-EOF Environmental Observation Activity Catalogue, and a questionnaire targeted at activity leads, will form the basis of this work, the outputs of which will be available from July 2013.
