Spatial search

Please note: when you activate the map search, any records in the catalogue which contain no location information will be automatically filtered out.

Click on the 'Map search' button to open a map that allows you to filter records by location.

Spatial search

As you zoom in and out of the map the results lists will change to show only records whose location is within the map window. For example, if you zoom the map to show Northern Ireland, any Welsh records will be excluded. The default behaviour (selection method = is within) is that all records with a UK coverage will also be excluded because it only displays results whose location is ENTIRELY WITHIN the map viewport.

Changing the selection method to "Intersects" will allow you to view records which are contained wholly or partially within the selected map viewport.

In the example below:

  • selecting "Entirely within map area" from the selection method will return only one result – record B. This is because only record B's bounding box is contained entirely within the map window. The bounding box of records A and C cross the map window but are not wholly within it, record D is outside the window completely.
  • selecting "That overlap map area" will return three results – records A, B and C. This is because all or part of the records' bounding boxes are contained within the map window. Record D is not retuned as its bounding box is outside the map window.
